Man in Converter Conniption Shoots TV

February 20, 2009

(Feb. 20, 2009) JOPLIN, MO.: A Missouri man found a unique way of handling his DTV reception problems, according to a report at KARE-TV, the NBC affiliate in Joplin. Mo. The guy shot his TV after not being able to get the converter box to work properly. He was charged with unlawful use of a firearm, the station’s Web site said.

Police responded Wednesday to reports of shots being fired at the home. The 70-year-old owner of the home was reported to be angry of the loss of his cable service and not able to get the converter to pick up signals. His wife told the police he’d been drinking.

TVB needs to check its sources or send some reporters back to journalism class. As stated above, according to the original coverage of this story the man was upset because his CABLE TV was cut off. Nothing at all to do with the DTV transition. Why is this story still up and uncorrected?

1) KARE-TV is not the Joplin NBC affil. KSNF is. 2) Dateline is wrong. This took place in Webb City, MO. 3) The man did NOT shoot his tv because of a converter box. Webb City police only said the man was upset because his cable was shut off. Nowhere did the phrase "converter box" or "dtv" ever come out of the police chief. Here are stories from stations that actually covered the standoff. You'll see no mention of dtv or converter boxes in these stories, either. http://www.fox14tv.com/Global/story.asp?S=9867855&nav=menu658_3 http://www.joplinglobe.com/local/local_story_049200429.html

Are you sure about the call letters of that Joplin, Missouri, NBC affiliate?

And this is a fine example of why the late transition will not make a difference!
