China Central TV Nixes Olympics Delay

by TVB Staff | July 11, 2008
For the first time in it’s nearly 50-year history, China Central Television will air live events without a delay. Thus viewers across China will see records set and races run the second it happens.

According to a report from China’s Xinhua News Agency, CCTV traditionally delays broadcasts of live events for at least 30 seconds “to guarantee programs could be aired smoothly and safely… But at the Beijing Olympics, CCTV will not use the 30-second technical delay. Its programs will be synchronized with the international TV and radio signals distributed by the International Broadcast Center,” said Jiang Heping, controller of sports channel CCTV-5.

CCTV will air some 2,500 hours of Olympics coverage on seven of its 17 channels across China.
