SMPTE Creates 3D Task Force

by TVB Staff | July 25, 2008
The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers is putting together a task force to create a 3D mastering standard for home displays. The first meeting of the group is scheduled for Aug. 19 at the Entertainment Technology Center at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

The task force will explore what standards need to be set for 3D content distributed over broadcast, cable and satellite systems, as well as for packaged media such as DVDs, the Internet and for playout on TV and computer screen. The group will then issue a report in six months defining “issues and challenges, minimum standards, evaluation criteria and more,” according to SMPTE.

The Aug. 19 meeting will feature 3D technology demonstrations and is open to professionals across the industry. More information is available from SMPTE.
