Telecast Fiber Systems in Worchester, Mass., and All Mobile Video in New York successfully used single-mode fiber to link up 20 cameras over a four-block area to do a live, global hi-def broadcast of an awards show. The even took place Dec. 6, 2007 at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, with veteran producer Marc Bauman at the helm.
Bauman said if SMPTE fiber and DT-12 copper had been used for audio, they would have needed more than 33 cable runs, some more than 2,000 feet long.
The crew had to lay cable through Central Park and within the museum while it was open. The group spent a week on site preparing and wrapping the event.
